What a great upbeat song for levels I and II Spanish! This song is clean (no drug, alcohol, sex, nada) full of regular ar, er and ir verbs and a few boot verbs (empezar), ir+a+infinitive, a bit of weather vocab (lluvia) and easy to understand. There's a bit of "pa' qué" type slang to get your students into what real native speaker Spanish sounds like and a great positive theme. This song is "Waka waka" by Shakira. The song includes many present tense verbs and present tense stem-changing verbs. We've all heard of the "Tener es tuve..." (La cucaracha) preterite song for irregular verbs, but where's the song for regular verbs?

After several weeks of me choosing the song of the week, the students have a research project where they research song lists and choose their own artist. They study the life of this artist, write a biography, choose a song, and find a grammatical structure that they want us to focus on. Students loved this and I did too since it introduced me to songs that interested the students. It was definitely the project of the year for my 9th graders! I gave them a few days in class to work on this.

Enrique Iglesias Cloze Listening Activity--Heroe
Created to support vocab used in Avancemos 2--Leyendas Unit
Use the youtube link in the footer or play the audio of Heroe for the class.
Have the students complete the cloze activity and then discuss the meaning of each vocabulary word in the context of the song.
You may also wish to compare and contrast cultural expectations of storylines (the video has a tragic end for the protagonists) and point out the deep romantic nature of the lyrics.

Canción - "Si tú la ves" by Nicky Jam: IPA-like activity for DOPs/IOPs
This is a IPA-like activity using song lyrics to Si tú la ves by Nicky Jam. The song uses preterite, imperfect and DOPs/IOPs (Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns). Also included are the song lyrics and a cloze-passage listening quiz.
It usually takes me one class period to learn about the singer, listen to the song, watch the video and work on the worksheet. A week later, I will give the cloze-passage song quiz as a listening assessment.
