This is an assignment that I used at the beginning of the year for my journalism class. My class submits articles to the local newspaper. However, before we started that adventure, I wanted to make sure the students had a basic understanding of journalism and investigative writing concepts. This assignment is also really fun because it requires students to create a newspaper for a fictional community of their choosing! The requirements are listed in the PDF.

I combed textbooks and the web to create an exhaustive list of my favorite slang words from the 1920s. Sure, you've probably heard of the "heebie-jeebies", but what about a "face stretcher" (an older woman who tries, without success to appear younger)? I used this simple organizer to help students plan out an article that they wanted to write for our school newspaper. It was a great starting point for students that were struggling with the concept of writing a newspaper article. Expository and Free Verse Poetry
There is not much to give you (hard copy) with this lesson. You can find the actual lesson written out on my blog athttp://mellissazipp.blogspot.com/2014/02/a-little-reading-little-writing.html . My students and teachers enjoyed the relationship between reading expository text and then writing poetry to reflect what they learned. I can see this type of lesson being done with all kinds of research topics. Fun way to show what you learned!

Last week when it looked as though we would be going online soon I promised my students a writing project on the Corona Zombie Apocalypse so here it is. this is so not a beautiful finished project due to the fact I, along with all of you, am re-learning my job right now in order to go virtual.
