Lab Activity Calculating Rates of Tectonic Plate Motion

Created by
Mrs Lyons
In this activity students will calculate the rate of the movement of Pacific Tectonic plate by examinining the formation of Hawaiian island chain. Students begin by determining ages of rocks found on each island using radiometric dating principle. Then they use scale maps to determine real world distances between islands. Finally they determine speed of motion from distance and time passed. This lab utilizes the claim, evidence and reasoning framework to guide students to synthesis of ideas and

BUNDLE: Draw the Fibonacci Spiral, Fibonacci in Nature, Golden Ratio

Welcome to the world of FIBONACCI! The following three labs are presented in an investigative manner, intended to provoke thought among the students and to guide them into an outstanding learning experience as they enter the fascinating world of The Fibonacci Sequence. Each lab addresses the Fibonacci Sequence from a different perspective, and each offers students a learning experience, rich and packed with learning enrichment. The introductory lab to the Fibonacci Sequence is, in my opinion, the

This digital physics lab is great for Kinematics, Motion in 1D. It uses the PhET simulator of "Moving Man" (link provided) and has been completely adapted so that student can investigate 100% remotely. The lab can be completed alone, in pairs or small groups. It allows students to manipulate with a simulator and answer various questions about different scenarios of motion in 1D. The lab objectives allow the student to enhance their understandings of position, displacement, velocity and accelerat

Quadratic Function Activity About Your Dental Arch

Created by

Through this activity students will discover properties of parabolas while comparing the parabola they all carry around with them every day - their dental arch. Students will brainstorm ways to measure a dental arch and ultimately take an "impression" of their arch by taking a bite out of a slice of bread. Then they will trace their arch onto a graph, use the graph to generate a table of values, and then use the table to plug into an equation for the most "perfect" dental arch. Students love

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE GROUND… What’s the tallest place around? Using a mirror placed on the ground, students will determine heights of objects that are not conveniently measured by other means and take indirect measurement from a concept into practice. The lab has clear instructions for how to execute the measurements, an example, and then templates for students to do their own measurements and computations.Teachers must have mirrors and tape measures for this lab - 1 set for each group of stud

Miracle Year Projects Bundle: Einstein's Miracle Year Discoveries

Albert Einstein, one of the most brilliant scientists of our time, produced four amazingly creative and groundbreaking discoveries in articles published during his famous Miracle Year of 1905. These articles included four important topics: light’s wave-particle duality, atomic existence, special relativity, and the mass-energy relationship, E = mc^2.This bundle includes four investigations into these four groundbreaking topics (one each). To help students organize their observations and ideas,

Engineering: Weights and Measures Conversion Tables

A weights and measures conversion table is useful when converting and calculating engineering, construction and STEM problem solving projects and activities. It helps students learn how to locate information and convert that information into their calculations. The conversion table also allows teachers to increase the rigor in their activities and problem solving projects by supplying students access to the needed information to accurately calculate a complex problem.

This is a multiple concepts lab that has a lot of 'wow' factor for students as metals disappear and new ones appear. It is in miniscale so you that don't use that much of your chemicals. For 250 students, I generally use up: 20 g Fe, three 12"x12" sheets of Al foil, 12" of Mg ribbon, 20g Zn powder, and 200 ml of 1M CuSO4 solution. Equipment: large test tubes, 0.001 accuracy balance, long glass thermometer, small beaker, graduated cylinder, timer (or let them use cell phones) Concepts covered:

For science teachers, energy is a hard unit to teach. Hero's Engine shows how energy in converted from one for to another. For this I used the Engine set I found in my storage area, but you can look around or find other engines available in your school district. I did this as a demo, but you can expand it in a chemistry lab. This unit includes all the worksheets that you'll need to study for energy, and can be used to introduce alternative energy.Easel Activity: This is now updated with an Easel
