Potions Class - STEM with a Wizardy Twist

Includes three short STEM activities (elephant toothpaste, unpoppable bubbles, and slime) presented as wizards potions. It includes the experiment (potion), a short explanation about the science, and links to longer explanations or alternative ways to conduct the experiment. These would be good for short fun STEM experiments or to add some flair to those reading Harry Potter or other book that included wizards. It would also be fun to add some science near Halloween.

Candy Corn Experiment

This is a small experiment that can be done for Halloween fun! All you need is water, oil, vinegar, jars (or even small dixie cups), and candy corn! The lab sheet is made for 3-6 graders but you can just have lower level students make their Hypotheses and findings in their journals or extra sheet of paper. They can even draw pictures of what they observe instead of writing. I set up the writing portion with indentations so it is easy for the students to recognize how many paragraphs needed

This Science Lab incorporates Math, Science and Social Studies! Each student brings an apple from home. Read a story about Johnny Appleseed, teach your students the basics of measurement with a balance scale and use cubes to calculate length. Cut the apple open and look at the seeds. Students draw the seeds and discuss how they can use their apple. (I also make an apple pie the night before and we each get a bit after the lab is over!)

K, 1st, 2nd math fall activity. Form of measurement could be cups or grams. My class had 3 pumpkins for this activity. There were 3 groups, so a group of students only worked with one pumpkin for the entire activity. Students looked over the pumpkins, then estimated how many cups we could fill up with the seeds and pulp from the inside of the pumpkin. Students read from the provided sentence frames. Students took turns reaching into the pumpkin and pulling out the seeds, etc and filled up a 8oz.

This activity teaches students what happens when they mix certain primary colors together. It also introduces children to some easy cooking and measuring skills. I have included one "Potion" but encourage teachers to create their own based on their children's skill level.
