Ratio Recipe Final Project Handout

This is a great end of unit project for rates, ratios and proportions. The student facing introduction is as follows; "You have found your favorite recipe for a dessert or appetizer and want to bring it to a class party. The problem is your recipe doesn’t serve enough people. Use proportions to increase the recipe to serve all the people needed. Make 1 serving per person. We have 15 people we need to serve."There are multiple parts to this project, including creating a brochure for their new con

Christmas Math: "Christmas 2025" Career and Wage Project Using Linear Algebra

As a way to prepare my students for the upcoming final exam and connect them with some college and career plans, I created a project in which they can create a linear equation based on a job they choose from a list of options. As a hook, students will write about a time they did not get what they want for Christmas. Then they will have the opportunity to describe their ideal Christmas in 2025. I have suggested a life with family, single and traveling, etc. Students will then estimate how much s

Students watch a short video about Benjamin Banneker's life and accomplishments, then collaborate to produce a PowerPoint slideshow. They'll solve equations using substitution to decode their own Tick-tock Clock, after watching a read-aloud of the book. Their creative side will run wild with an open slide for their own showcase of Mr. Banneker's life. My students were amazed at all he accomplished and excited to learn more to contribute to our celebration of Black History Month.

Kids use science tools, math equations, and prior knowledge to see how math can help real people come to conclusions. This video is very hands on. It requires a water measuring device, a dropper, access to computers and headphones, and an open mind. This took one 90 minute period for my algebra 1 students to complete. Students watch a video of water dropping and use that to ultimately determine how much water is wasted over time.
