Here is a copy of my challenge brief for the Constitution Children's book. It was a really fun Project Based Learning Activity. Current Events Social Studies Project
Multiple project options to get students excited about a current event/issue of their choice. Students can write a rap or poem, a movie script, create a billboard, or record a two minute commercial. I assign this project over the summer. Our first unit is American government which culminates in students writing letters to their representatives. Students often choose to write about the current event they studied over the summer.

Current Events: News Reporter
Add Current Events into your daily routine. Set up a class calendar and assign a daily news reporter. Students use the planner and write or record a news video for the class. There is also a student self-evaluation rubric for grading. My class looks forward to the daily reports. We do ours right after the morning announcements. Takes 4-7 minutes to share and discuss. Activity can be adapted to suit any grade.

Letter to Congress Presentation & Writing Project
Students will focus on an issue that is near and dear to them. They will draft a letter to their local Congressperson outlining what the issue is, make an argument to support their issue using research, and then create a presentation to share with the class as well. An optional activity is to have your students vote on each argument as if they are proposed bills.

CE.2 Foundations of Government PBL Project
Students will answer the driving question by learning about the Fundamental Political Principles that our government was founded upon and the Founding Documents  that led to our US Constitution. This file contains the rubric for a zine project that students in my 8th grade U.S. History classes make. A zine is a miniature comic book or informational booklet that is made from a single sheet of paper and contains eight pages. With the research, rough draft, and final draft, this project should take students about 4 hours. This project involved reading, research, writing for an audience, planning, and drawing.
