My students like the simplicity of knowing that they same thing is expected week after week. And because it is not too detail focused, it is adaptable for almost any activity or musical assignment they need to perform for their class.

It is important that students self assess their progress both in rehearsal and after performances. This rubric allows them to do both. I usually have them complete it (in pencil) after watching a video of a rehearsal a week or two before the concert date. Then we discuss it to prepare for the performance. After the concert, we watch that video and reassess (with highlighter). I then use it as a guide when I am assigning grades for the concert.

Assigning grades in the choir classroom can be difficult. When that parent calls you and asks about their child's grade you need to be able to have a clear explanation. Let's face it: What IS the difference between the grade of "94" and a "95"? I wrestled with this monster for several years, and what I came up with is 15 "goals" that each singer works toward regardless of the concert cycle, complexity of the music, level of musicianship in the ensemble, theory concept, or sight-reading difficult
The student portfolio is a physical folder of organized work that is intended to display the progress made, content learned, and experiences had in choir during the school year. The portfolio should challenge students to develop organizational skills that will better prepare them for their transition to high school.
I created this rubric to cover the aspects of great singing technique in kid-friendly language. The rubric uses vocabulary appropriate to upper elementary students and older and is phrased for self-evaluation.To go along with the reflective rubric, the second page is a goal setting sheet students can fill out in order to practice setting specific goals in their musicianship. By prompting students to think about what they could do to practice their goal skill, this activity can bring up discussio
Body percussion can be a great way for students to participate in music class without singing. It also acts as a great introduction to reading rhythms and playing percussion instruments. I especially think it's great for any flagship ensemble that has opportunities to share music with others outside the walls of the school. Feel free to add and subtract from the topics listed. Enjoy!
