This is a way to challenge kids to read a variety of books. They have some license of choice, but are given a goal of twenty points, which translates to ten books. This is a good long term project (quarter or semester) that holds kids accountable for their reading. The method of proof is up to the teacher (Accelerated Reader, Summary logs, etc.). An assessment/grade can easily be taken based on a twenty point scale. Can be incorporated into literacy circles and literacy centers.

When given a writing assignment, some students think they are “done” way before this is the case. This handout/activity allows the class as a whole to take responsibility for their written work. Allow at least two students to be responsible for each category. When a student is “done” he/she must take the work to one person in each category. The person signs his/her name next to the 1, 2, or 3. If there are too many 1’s, the student has more work to do before submitting the assignment to the teac

Importance of learning English language arts

English language arts (ELA) concepts — reading, writing, listening, and speaking — empower students to become effective communicators, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners. They are the foundation for all other types of learning as students must rely on ELA skills to master content from other subject areas and communicate what they’ve learned.

Strong reading skills can help students make sense of written content, and gather information for further analysis. Writing skills can help students articulate their ideas, construct arguments, and synthesize information. And speaking and listening skills empower students to clearly present their ideas, participate in group discussions, and collaborate with their classmates. This is why teaching English language arts is critically important for student’s success in school and beyond.

Benefits of learning English language arts
