Water Filter Experiment- packet
This experiment is great for understanding water filtration. We use 2 liter bottles with the bottom cut off. Students preplan in their groups what materials to use and how to place them in the upsidedown 2 liter. Once the prepare their "filtration system", I pour dirty water in and we collect it (glass baby food jars work great because you can see inside) out of the small opening at the bottom. Eacher chapter identifies 4 academic and content vocabulary words that students need to infer their meaning based on how the word was used in the chapter. Students are also asked content questions about the reading for each chapter. Questions range from a DOK level 1 question to level 3.

The First Red Scare "Dot" Game
Randomly hand out the cards* after you have printed out in color and cut out (I printed them out on cardstock paper to make them not so see-through). Remind students to not show anyone their card or better, put the cards in their pockets. Then they must go around and try to figure out which of their classmates are "communists" or red dot cardholders.
