The Vocabulary Puzzle is intended to be students' first encounter with the Vocabulary to Learn in a given chapter of Latin for the New Millennium, Level I. I give them the puzzle before they've looked at the reading passage or the vocabulary list.  They are supposed to try to use their prior knowledge to match up Latin words with their English meanings. They will write each Latin word into the box containing the correct English equivalent. I do not allow them to look in their books or at any

The aim of this material is to introduce the children to the Latin derivation and history of the months of the year and is a great addition to any calendar studies. It could be used in its entirety or individually at the onset of each new month. Nomenclature cards, or 3-part cards are a wonderful way for children to interact with new information. Latin Verb Synopsis (Full)

Aeterna Latina
This verb synopsis sheet gives students a chance to review all the variations of regular Latin verbs. They can view all three moods along with infinitives and participles on one page. This allows them to see the connections between different forms: how the imperfect and pluperfect subjunctives take their stems from the corresponding infinitives, for instance, or how the perfect passive and future active infinitives are built on the corresponding participles.

If I had to have only one tool to use with my biology students, it would be this list of commonly used Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes. I literally give this to my students each nine weeks and have them put it in their binder or science notebook to use as part of their glossary. If they can know the literal translation of many of the parts of words we use in science, they can figure out a majority of the vocabulary for the year. In order to help my students learn how to use their glossa

Exit Slip Templates

Exit slips are a great formative assessment tool. Whether they are graded or just collected, they provide much needed feedback on what students are able to complete or understand at the end of the class. However, I found that the more open an exit slip was (give one thing you learned today and one question you still have OR what three things stuck with you today) the least likely my students would provide the specific feedback I needed to know how and when to adjust my plans. Most students just

My precocious 5th graders always feel very sophisticated using these and understanding the meaning of the symbols. I don't think I'd go much lower than 4th grade unless the children are extremely advanced; but it's definitely suitable for older kids. The male symbol represents the sword and shield of Mars. The female symbol is Aphrodite's hand mirror. I print out a batch of these each year and laminate them, punching a hole at the circle up top and cutting down the line, hanging them off pus

I specifically use this for vocabulary study in my Latin classroom, but it could be easily adapted to work for students learning other languages. Printed as a front and back, students will practice each vocabulary word by writing the word, its definition, drawing the word, and writing a sentence using the word. You may choose to have them do these tasks in the target language or their native language.

Ecce Romani Ch. 32 Derivative Worksheet Example

This file contains an example of how to complete a derivative worksheet for the chapter derivatives. As you can see there needs to be more space between the individual words. My sentences were far from creative; I urged my students to be creative in the sentences that they wrote. If you have enough time in your class period, I would suggest that you have the students go to the front of the classroom and read aloud their answers to the assigned words. This is time consuming, but my students loved
