I created these roles specific to non-fiction texts as I found that traditional literature circle roles were too limited to fiction. Roles are specific in skill, but general enough to apply to various texts. My students have applied these roles to texts ranging from Nickle and Dimed to David and Goliath to I am Malala (and many in between). I've had great success dividing the unit into 4-5 group meetings and having students rotate roles, so they complete 4-5 different roles throughout the unit.
