developing understanding of place value of whole numbers to the millions

Place value is a critical component of the common core and sequences from grade to grade. From understanding place value and reading of numbers to understanding place value and the concepts of powers of ten. These slides were actually used as a formative assessment to identify where students were at, on the place value spectrum. Now place value progresses from grade to grade. As a formative assessment, I knew where the students were at, at middle school math students. It was always my philo

Managing Money

This activity gives middle schoolers a glimpse of money management decisions that people face in the real world. The numbers are smaller and easier to manage, but students still sometimes "go broke" and have to downsize. Print out the register for students to complete as you go through the PowerPoint. We had students draw from a bowl to see if they would have 0 children, 1 child, or 2 children; a bigger family pays more for food, clothing, and utilities. We also copied and cut out the pictur

This product shows students that all decimals are tenths, hundredths, and thousandths and that a fraction with a denominator of 10 or 100 could easily be converted to a decimal. This lesson seeks to rid the misconception of a, for example, a fraction of 3/5 being 3.5 as a decimal by knowing the only way you can use the same numbers from the fraction for the decimal is if the part is over 10 or 100.

Big Numbers - place value game

I fear we’re killing kids with worksheets – even paperless ones. So I’m trying to learn how to create lessons that involve something bigger than worksheets. Here’s another attempt:This is a Zipped file containing a power point math lesson for students in grades 4-8, and the handouts students will need to play a game with place value. The game is easily differentiated simply by pairing students of equal ability and letting them decide how many place values their game will involve. The ppt provides

Fractions and percent drives fifth grade crazy. I have designed a powerpoint for explaining percents using a thermometer. Much like the common core number line concept, the thermometer compares 100 percent to a whole number and then breaks the number into smaller pieces. I used the model to teach fifth grade math, however, it also speaks to both 6th and 7th grade numeracy standards. This is the second in the series. This download is the problem and resources only.
