Penny Boat Lab: Density, Buoyancy and Archimedes
This is a one period activity/lab to teach students about the concept of density and Archimedes Principle, why things float. Students each get a piece of aluminum foil and design and make a boat. They then must calculate how many pennies it will carry before sinking, and then test it. This is an excellent one day STEM project that combines science, math, design and construction. One Way Ticket: Using Poetry to Analyze The Great Migration
Students listen to and read Langston Hughes' poem "One Way Ticket" to analyze the push factors and the process of The Great Migration. This is a Black History Biography project which required my students to create a new cereal based on the life on a famous African American. The students had to design a cereal box to tell the story of the person they chose. They had to include things like a cereal name that relates to the person, a picture of the person, a timeline of the person's life, character traits of the person, and a written report of the biography they read about the person.
