I have taught American History, World History, American Government (including Advanced Placement) in a urban school for over 15 years. Beginning 5 years ago, I started teaching American History and World History at a school for immigrants who do not speak English. This new job placement involved a lot of learning on the job as well as completing my TESOL endorsement at The Ohio State University. Currently, I teach high school social studies to all English Language Learners.
I believe classrooms should be student centered and focus on exploratory and inquiry activities that includes teacher scaffolding to ensure learning and success at all levels. I also believe that it is important to activate prior learning and to help students to find connections in their learning to increase engagement and retention.
