I use this group project to review major grammatical concepts with my 11th grade students, and it would work well with any high-school level English/ Language Arts class. Because students now learn many grammar terms/ ideas in middle school, this project gives them the opportunity to the review the concepts and then to teach them to others, reinforcing the skill. I break the class class into groups of 3-5 students, and have provided you with group topics, including phrases, clauses, parts of s

Teaching Grammar: Students Become the Teacher

This project, designed for advanced learners, was created to allow students to take center stage in the classroom and become the teacher. It is based on the concept that we better understand something when we have to teach it to others. While teachers often experience this, students rarely have the chance. Students work in small groups to create a lesson plan, worksheet, and other materials around an assigned grammar concept such as subject-verb agreement or when to use passive and active voice

Vocabulary Talks

Teaching at a high diverse, low income school, I saw many students struggle with higher level language knowledge & acquisition in their writing and speaking assignments. Meant as a whole quarter assignment, these vocabulary talks are meant to be quick, focused, well-rehearsed mini-lessons on words that can essentially create a class "word web" for students to use. It caters to all types of learners (kinesthetic, verbal, visual, etc.) Attached are the directions and rubric to help guide this

MLA Format, Harry Potter Style!

Poor Ron Weasley—he's not the greatest essay writer. However, students will become masters of MLA style by looking at this poorly formatted MLA-formatted paper (Ron's Divination scroll!) and noting the various issues wrong with it. In this download, you will find a teacher's set of directions (complete with Common Core standards), an answer key, and an incorrectly formatted paper in MLA style (and in this case, I use that term loosely!). This handout can be given to students as a pretest to se

Are you like me and you HATE teaching grammar because you feel like the students don't care and especially don't retain the grammar rules or skills?!?That's why I don't teach grammar anymore. I make THE STUDENTS teach it!! *cue evil laugh*We know that to teach something, people need to know it well, so when they teach the grammar concept they have to know it well to teach it (so at least they will learn at least one grammar concept well, haha). We also know that if we don't teach them HOW to teac

This activity can be used for Spanish classes of all levels when learning the use of the preterit/past tense. It not only employs the use of the grammar tense, but exposes students to cultural distinctions with children who live in the streets of Latin America (and worldwide). This can be done collaboratively or individually. Prezi can be purchased separately to add on to this lesson plan for a 90 minute class activity.

Learn more about grammar resources

Grammar is the study of the rules and structures that govern language. It encompasses a multitude of elements, including parts of speech, sentence structure, vocabulary, punctuation, and much more. With a strong grasp of grammar, students can make their writing stronger, clearer, and more effective.

Initially, students will learn about the parts of speech, like nouns, verbs, and adjectives. As they progress in their learning, they’ll explore things like irregular verbs and how to construct intricate sentences, phrases, and clauses.

If you’re a teacher or parent looking for printable and digital resources to help your student learn grammar, but you’re not sure where to start, TPT has got you covered. We’ve got a comprehensive collection of grammar resources, created by other teachers, that are designed to help with any need across grade levels — whether you're teaching grammar to 2nd graders or 11th graders. With plenty of TPT resources at your fingertips, you can make a grammar expert out of your students in no time.

Fun and engaging grammar activities to try

You can teach grammar effectively and engage your students at the same time, with a variety of activities and techniques that cater to different learning styles and preferences. Here are a few examples of the different types of activities that you can find on TPT to help teach students about key grammatical concepts.

Sentence Diagramming & Building

Help students see the relationships between words, phrases, and clauses by having them break down sentences into visual diagrams. Or, help them understand sentence structure by giving them a set of words or phrases and having them construct grammatically correct sentences.

Grammar Word Search

Use word search puzzles to have students locate words that relate to a specific grammar concept (for example, you could have students search for adjectives).

Grammar Bingo

This is a great way to engage the whole class and reinforce a grammar concept your students are learning. Simply call out various grammar rules, sentence examples, or parts of speech, and have students mark the corresponding grammar rule (or error!).

Escape Rooms

Using an escape room-style activity, students can solve grammar puzzles to "escape" within a given time limit. They’re also great for providing children with the opportunity to showcase everything they've learned with a competitive element.

Grammar Quizzes

Regular quizzes can reinforce learning, test students’ mastery of grammar, and help track their progress over time.

These (and other!) activities can help deepen your students’ appreciation for grammar and enhance their creative writing skills.
