From Electric English... This is a three-part assessment. The first is simply true and false questions; the second is multiple choice; while, as a rule, I try to avoid this type of simplified question and answer, it is still good to give the students practice.... After all, they will see these types of questions on standardized tests. The third section asks students to make inferences from their reading, from Irving's life experiences, and from their class discussions, then to apply that knowled

"The Lottery" is by far my favorite short story ever. Jackson's writing style allows for a unique portal to the internal workings of the human mind, however sadistic the story may be! As such, I have built a whole unit around the tense atmosphere and unusual imagery Jackson has used to bring to life her allegorical statement on society. Students will follow the marginal questions to uncover the deeper significance of the setting, gender roles and humanity as a whole. What's included? Links to e

Common Core Close Reading (The High School Annotation Survival Guide)

Close reading a text is an essential skill to teach, especially in a high school English class following a Common Core aligned curriculum. My annotation strategy teaches students to record the gist of each paragraph or chunk of text on the right and talk back to the text using symbols on the left. For the gist, students first must determine the type of noun the chunk of text is about. They then decide what is being said about the noun. This mini bundle includes the following: - The General An

"What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?" Indirect Characterization Organizer

This is a graphic organizer that I use to teach indirect characterization with this short story. Students look for textual evidence, infer character traits, determine how the author reveals the traits, and try to ascertain character motivations. This is a great during-reading or post-reading activity. I usually give students time to complete the chart and then we fill it in from the Promethean Board as we discuss answers. Answers are in red on the second graphic organizer.
