Students write the character's name in the center of the chart, and then include description from the text of what the character says and does, how the character looks, thinks, and feels, and how other characters react to the character. Finally, students complete a reader's reaction to draw conclusions about the character based on the previously recorded information.

The Somebody Wanted But So chart is a way to scaffold and support students as they consider the conflict of a reading passage. Students record what a character or person wants in one column, citing evidence from the text if appropriate. They record the "but," or the challenge that occurred in the next column. Finally they record in the outcome in the So column.
