Winter Olympics Webquest -- Ratios and Proportions
This webquest is a great way to have your middle school students learn about ratios and proportions independently or in groups. The Winter Olympics theme is current and fun, and helps students see the connection between math skills and real life. Students are given 8 facts to look up (exact phrases to type into Google are provided). They put the facts into ratio form, and then answer a question by creating and solving a proportion. Even when students can correctly calculate interest, I find they often don't quite understand what it is or how it is used in real life. This webquest has students investigate interest rates for different scenarios they will encounter in the future (car loans/student loans/savings accounts/etc.).
I use this to introduce the concept of interest and pair it with the BrainPop credit card and interest videos, quizzes, and activities using my school's subscription.
