I use this project as part of the addition and subtraction unit in my 3rd grade classroom. It gives students a real world scenario in which they would use their knowledge of addition and subtraction to manage money. The kids love it because it offers a lot of choice and is very fun! It could also be used for advanced 2nd graders or as a review at the beginning of the year for 4th graders.

Create a real life math activity by having kids work out decimal math and percents problems in a "virtual restaurant" in your classroom. Print out or obtain to-go menus from a restaurant. I once asked a group of students to list the numbers that were not in the 2 thru 9 times table, most of hem were at a loss. This exercise is a creative way of displaying knowledge of the tables,and also enhancing cognitive skill.
