Nikki Grimes' novel Bronx Masquerade depicts a class of students who are learning poetry and inadvertently learning about each other. This unit includes section questions on both poetry and prose as well as opportunities for short research. Questions are short answer and extended response and focus learning on characterization, figurative language, comprehension and underlying meaning. Bronx Masquerade can be used for lower grades, but I have used it with low level high school students.
