This is a unit to teach the book The Education of Margot Sanchez by Lilliam Rivera. This is a book about a young Puerto Rican girl from Riverdale who is forced to work in her parents supermarket over the summer in the South Bronx. This is a great and easy read for ELLs who may be able to connect with the Hispanic protagonist, but would work for all students! Bronx Masquerade Novel Unit
Nikki Grimes' novel Bronx Masquerade depicts a class of students who are learning poetry and inadvertently learning about each other. This unit includes section questions on both poetry and prose as well as opportunities for short research. Questions are short answer and extended response and focus learning on characterization, figurative language, comprehension and underlying meaning. Bronx Masquerade can be used for lower grades, but I have used it with low level high school students.
