This project is designed for 8th graders studying the Middle Ages. The project is designed so that kids get to pick and choose different activitites, each worth a different number of points. They essentially pick from a list of mini projects to design their own project. It would work for English and/or history classes and is easy to adapt. Middle Ages Europe Castle/Manor Project - 7th Grade History
Students will create a VISUAL DISPLAY (drawing, model, or Google Slides) of a CASTLE or MANOR in Middle Ages Europe. This project is usually assigned on a Monday and completed by that Friday. Throughout the classroom sessions during the week, we learn about manorial life and specifically look at the social relationships in feudal society. Students use all our classroom activities (videos, role playing, vocabulary, close readings, etc) to complete their project.

"Pop Culture": History Civilization 3D Display
This two-hour assignment (designed to be completed in two middle school class periods) is a pop-up display that represents the key parts of a culture or event. I've seen pop-up displays for social studies before but was never quite satisfied with the depth. They were more "pop" than substance and I feel this version really changes that.

Medieval Role Playing Activity
This is a group project that takes a single class period. This is the one lesson that students come back to me years later still laughing about how much fun it was. The students will be divided into small groups with a member of Medieval society assigned to them (Peasant, Pope Gregory, etc). The students will spend the first half of the class researching their assigned character.
The fun begins with the second half of the class when I pretend to be Oprah and have them "on my show" one at a time

In this project, students read and create art projects based on the original Arabian Nights stories from Medieval Islam. This includes instructions for the different projects as well as a link to the different stories that students have an opportunity to analyze.
