As a teacher who always tries to make learning fun and memorable I was caught off guard when given the challenge to teach the 8 parts of speech to 11 year old children. How can that be fun? What could I do to make grammar fun and exciting? That is easy...mix it with a creative fun project that involves PIZZA! This activity is sure to be one that your students will always remember as well as serve as a great instructional or review tool. Hey, teaching needs to be fun for the teachers too!

This is a great way to start working on STAAR passages with your students after the holidays. It is a very bright idea a coworker shared with me about four years ago to start implementing STAAR simulations in the classroom. I modified it a bit and gave it a name as well designed the thinking tracks that go along with it. It is a extremely engaging way to apply all knowledge previously taught in the classroom. Students will definitely enjoy the process. I hope it helps someone out there!

This is best used as a summative review activity, e.g. before a test on story elements.By having students create anchor charts, you improve their retention of the material, they get to see their own work on the walls (that's community building and cultural responsive

Students are asked which they agree with more and to offer explanations of their choice. After discussion they are asked to write the first paragraph of a short, short story that will illustrate the wisdom of their chosen quotation. This is a power point to help guide a project in which students create a poster to describe a particular author. I also printed the directions to give to the students as a houndout. We started the project in groups during class, then I allowed them to take it home to finish independently.I used this as an alternative form of assessment in our 10th grade American Literature class.
