Writing an Autobiography Assignment
Give your students an easy to follow template to help them develop their own autobiographies. This is a great resource for the beginning of the school year, or when studying a unit on Autobiographies.

Holocaust Group Genocide - AVID Strategy Marking the Text
Students are a read and mark the text about 5 different groups of people who were targeted during the Holocaust. In this way, students are able to see that Jewish people were NOT the only targets.
Second, students write 4 separate paragraphs over their targeted group, edit the paragraphs with the teacher during student/teacher writing conferences, and finally create a product, a poster.

Current Event: summary and opinion with rubric
This is a weekly assignment I give to 4-5 fifth graders a week. This assignment asks the student to find a news story that interests them. They will read it, take notes about it, form an opinion about it, write a 1 paragraph summary, and 1 paragraph opinion about it. The student then presents their work by reading their summary and opinion, and then leading a class discussion about the article.

This activity analyzes race within Holes by Louis Sachar. While reading, students see the racial tensions in America from a flashback to 1880. Sam, the onion man, kissed Kate the school teacher. As students view CNN 10, have them select one story of interest and write a one sentence summary. My Movie Review
As part of our core curriculum thematic units, students are required to view movies that relate and challenge their way of thinking. This is a homework assignment where students are encourage to view movies together or with family members, then have discussion before answering the questions on the ‘My Movie Review’ sheet.
