TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Wibur Middle School (9 years) -7th Grade CWC, Reg, Adv (5 yrs) -8th Grade CWC, Reg, Adv (5 yrs) AVID Site Team Campus High School (1 yr) -10th Grade English CWC, Reg (1yr) -11th Grade College Bound English (1yr)

MY TEACHING STYLE

I strongly believe in achieving "buy in" from my students. The best way to achieve that is through strong student/ teacher relationships and trust. Once the toughest students know you care, the class falls your direction . . . and a teacher can take them anywhere. I choose high interest topics for my regular classes: Music Like Poetry, curricular examples that relate directly to them, James Patterson novels with writing assignments from character perspectives . . . These win me their attention. Advanced students don’t need more homework or more work in general, they need higher level novels and teaching strategies that push them to the highest Bloom’s levels. This may be achieved by reading classical novels and Non-fiction passages that may or may not relate directly to novels. Formal preparation for writing and formal writing in general is stressed. Philosophical Chairs activities and student-led Socratic seminars with inside/outside circle discussion techniques are best to achieve high level thinking prior to assessment and formal writing. Finally, a focus on author’s purpose necessary for all Fiction and Non-Fiction.
