High School English Getting to Know You Activity with Sandra Cisnero's "My Name"
This lesson plan was created as a way to get to know students on the first day of school. I composed a paragraph about my own name that I give to students, but teachers should change this to be about themselves. It’s a nice way to create comfort in the English classroom and get to know your students.
The lesson focuses on annotation and active reading and also begins to identify tone. It also gives students their first opportunity to try creative writing.

Cultural Hero Project (Greek Mythology/Percy Jackson Unit)

Rhetoric Song Analysis Assignment
I did a lesson on rhetoric with my students and to get them introduced to the topic, we analyzed songs. Students chose songs to decipher how rhetoric was being used in a three part assignment of choosing the songs, answering questions about the songs, and preparing for a Socratic Seminar where they would all share as a group about the songs they chose.
