Students will illustrate or cut out pictures of healthy food choices to sort into the 5 food groups. I have used grocery ads and let the students cut out foods from the various groups as well as having them draw their own foods. It’s always fun to see what foods the students pick regardless of how the activity is completed. Included is the plate sorting mat where students will complete the sort. This is based on the USDA My Plate.

I use this project as a math center activity during a unit on Health and Nutrition or Colors. I give each student individual bags of different colored M&M’s (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and brown). They have to count how many of each different color they have.
