December/Christmas/Winter Journal Writing Prompt Booklet
This is a 7 page booklet that features two journal entries on each page. The first is a title page, so there are 12 writing prompts. Each page has several lines for a student response, as well as a box to draw a picture of the journal entries.
These half sheets are to be cut out and given to students one at a time. At the end of the month, just before break, I like to punch holes and bind the journals for students to keep as a momento.

These strips can be used and stuck into the margins of children's books to help signpost them whilst writing in particular styles and genres. Each is colour coded and broken down into paragraphs with hints and tips including sentence starters.

Print this on regular computer paper, then students will fold it in half (hamburger style) and then fold it in have again. They can color the front and decorate the inside cover. My favorite part is where they can write an acrostic poem for their mom.

WORD CHOICE: Are You Showing Not Telling
Are you frustrated with your student's lack of descriptive writing. This activity is a great introduction to the concept of showing not telling in writing. On each of the twelve pages, students have an opportunity to sketch a picture related to an emotion. At the bottom of each page, they should describe the emotion without using the actual word (e.g. my heart was racing, my jaw dropped, and etc.)

Personification Worksheets
Three (3) separate personification worksheets scaffolded to meet students at their specific ability. The first page consists of multiple choice questions, while the second has students underline example of personification, and the last asks students to explain what sentences using personification means. Summer Fun Calendar

This is a fun activity to use during a Mythology unit. The student invents a fictional god/goddess based on themselves. They then fill out the template be careful to include all of their important information/traits. The assignment is only complete when the students adds a creative name/illustration to the oval in the middle.

A line of nail polishes representing The Hunger Games was released earlier this month. It struck me that it might be fun for the students to create a nail polish line based on another set of star-crossed lovers: Romeo and Juliet. This activity would not only allow students to be creative, but to show their understanding of the events and characters in the story.
