WORD CHOICE: Are You Showing Not Telling
Are you frustrated with your student's lack of descriptive writing. This activity is a great introduction to the concept of showing not telling in writing. On each of the twelve pages, students have an opportunity to sketch a picture related to an emotion. At the bottom of each page, they should describe the emotion without using the actual word (e.g. my heart was racing, my jaw dropped, and etc.)

Instructional guide and handouts for students to write their own play. Handout walks students through the process they need to go through in order to complete the project, complete with a calendar to fill in, a story map to guide them, and instructions on how the typed paper should look. This project is very laid out and therefore can work for the elementary grades.

A story writing packet for a unit on "The Lightning Thief," by Rick Riordan. Students will write their own half-blood story with 16 pages of guidance on creating characters, locations, and event sequences. They will fill in a story map and edit their final work.
