Improving Word Choice
This writing lesson was developed to be used with the story "When I was Young in the Mountains" by Cynthia Rylant. Beginning with examples of good word choice and evaluating how authors use precise nouns, vivid verbs, and lively adjectives to improve their writing. Students will revise poor sentences with improved word choice and then compare their sentences to those in the story by Cynthis Rylant. A student handout is included within the SMARTboard presentation.

9 Poem Poetry Unit
This unit includes smart notebooks introducing 9 different kinds of poetry. This includes Haiku, Senryu, Concrete, Sound, Ode, I Used to be, Limerick, Color, and Cinquain. Each poem is explained, provides examples, and walks the students through practicing on their own. I typically have the students complete each poem in their writer's notebook and then publish as a formal poetry booklet.

Cause and Effect
This is a short lesson on Cause and Effect. The first two pages are a short story and answer page.
The following pages involve 5 cause and effect sentences, which the students will either fill in the cause or effect for each. For example, a picture is provided of two babies (one crying, one laughing). The sentences reads, "Mom wanted to take their picture..." This would be the cause, the students will have to write the effect.

First set of daily writing prompts.
There is one writing prompt per day. The date and day number are at the top of each page, below that is the writing prompt. Each day asks the students to do something a little bit different.
