I've been teaching middle school (taught all 3 grades at some point) for 10 years, all in English/Language Arts, and one year in which I had to teach both 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Having taught all kinds of learners, I'm now specializing in gifted education.
As a Gifted Education Specialist, I emphasize the development and showcasing of creativity in my classroom. I try to show my students that creativity comes in lots of forms - not just art or writing. For example, they were HUGE fans of CSA Cmdr Chris Hadfield and his videos about life in the International Space Station. Currently, I am learning more about Project-Based Learning and am hoping to begin using it more regularly in my Gifted Resource classroom.
Teacher of the Year Finalist, school year 2009-2010. Coach of the Year (track & field) for school years 2006-2007 and 2011-2012. My students at all levels showed consistent growth in Reading End-of-Grade (NC) standards during my time in North Carolina. Now based in Virginia and working with Gifted & Talented students, my students are showing consistent "Pass Advanced" rates on Reading Standards-of-Learning (VA) tests.
