TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been a high school English teacher at Grafton High School in Central Massachusetts since 1994. Currently, I teach college preparatory sophomores and seniors. Previously, I have taught Freshman English, Freshman Study Skills, Sophomore Writing and Speech and Advanced Placement Literature and Composition (2002-2017). In addition to teaching, I have served as English Department Head (1998-2009), Class Advisor(Class of 1998 ), Founder and Advisor to the Cultural Enrichment Club(1998-2008), The Tolerance Project Advisor (2005-2010) and GHS No Stomach For Cancer Walk Advisor (2012-2017). I have also served on many committees including NEASC Accreditation Steering Committee.

MY TEACHING STYLE

No matter what class I teach, I always want to make sure students can find a real-world connection to what we do in class. Also, I tell students that my goal is for them to "know why you think what you think." As much as possible, I try to embed study skills/organization skills into the different tasks we complete so they become more independent learners. This also helps students become more confident, which help with Social Emotional Learning. Although I am structured and organized, I also like to use humor and make our classroom a place in which students feel comfortable.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

English Department Head (1998-2009) Every Day Hero Award, 2012 This award is presented to individuals who have made a significant and positive contribution in enhancing the life of a student with special needs.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

After earning my Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 1990 from Bridgewater State College, I worked at Foxborough High School in Foxborough, MA, where I did my student teaching then worked as an instructional assistant in the Special Education Department. While doing so, I started graduate coursework in English at Bridgewater State College. From 1993-1994, I worked as a Graduate Assistant in the Academic Advising Center at Bridgewater State while completing my Master's.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

My husband and I have been married for 23 years and have 2 sons, one a sophomore in college and one a sophomore in high school. In my free time, I enjoy writing, reading, listening to music, walking, cooking and spending time at Cape Cod. I have also spent the last 12 years helping to raise awareness about stomach cancer, something that has personally impacted my family. From 2009- 2015, I served on the Board of Directors of No Stomach For Cancer, a non-profit devoted to raising awareness about stomach cancer.
