FULL LITERARY UNIT! TEACH LITERARY ELEMENTS AND ANALYSIS WITH AN AWARD-WINNING ANIMATED SHORT FILM: THE PRESENT. TEACH LITERARY ELEMENTS AND ANALYSIS WITH AN AWARD-WINNING ANIMATED SHORT FILM: THE PRESENT. In this workshop, students learn to identify characterization techniques, plot twist, theme, conflict, and symbolism and how make inferences based on evidence from the film. Includes constructed response writing prompts with sample answers for everything.

CULMINATING ACTIVITIES:

DESIGN A THEMED T-SHIRT: Use symbols and quotes from a novel, movie, short film or story to design a T-shirt on paper template.

GALLERY WALK: All you need is a rope and clothespins to create a gallery walk! Students will try to identify the literature or film on the T-shirts.

CREATE A PLOT TWIST: A narrative writing activity with templates to guide students to develop an exciting plot twist.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL THEMES: Self Acceptance, acceptance of those with differences or disabilities, living life fully despite challenges.

Film Summary: A young boy seems to be awful! He disrespects his mother when she gifts him with a new puppy. He even treats the puppy terribly when he discovers it is missing a leg. But a plot twist and beautiful theme emerge when viewers realize the boy is acting out because he has also lost a leg. Eventually the playful pup helps the boy rediscover himself, and students learn that things aren't always as they seem upon first appearance.

Allowing students to learn about literary elements using short films alleviates some learning blocks that struggling readers and students with attention disorders experience. Separating knowledge of literature from reading comprehension helps students learn more effectively and enjoyably, which will ultimately improve reading skills.
