Rationale: The informative writing workshop included in this unit does not teach formulaic writing. Formulas cause students to write awkwardly as they try to fill in the pieces. Rather, it teaches a framework that helps students naturally progress through a typical essay structure. Within the framework, students will be encouraged think freely and imaginatively. They will learn to write clearly and concisely to engage the reader, and to center their writing around the controlling idea of the thesis statement.

Rationale: This unit allows students to explore human tendencies to follow the crowd. It is a social/emotional activity that not only teaches students how to write a research paper and perform an experiment, but also helps them learn to cope with the issues of bullying and emotional abuse.

The short film workshop, For The Birds, was chosen to accompany this research project because the birds in the film are socially conforming. They are picking on a bird that looks different because his feathers are strange. As a result, they fall from the telephone line and lose all of their own feather. This workshop brings some light humor to a serious topic.
