Activity for Theoretical and Experimental Probability of Compound Events

This Skittles Lab is a fun and engaging way to get students excited about finding probabilities. The experiment involves finding the theoretical and experimental probability of choosing a specific order of skittles from a bag. Students work best in groups of three to calculate their probabilities and reflect on their results. This extends what students learned about Single Event Probabilities and now involves a Compound Event. There are step-by-step instructions for students to follow through ou

Writing and Graphing Linear Equations Project

This is the stained glass window project on steroids. Each student is given a list of conditions to choose from. They will choose 1 from each section and graph lines given those conditions. After graphing, students will create a table of information about each line. The table must include the number they chose, the equation in slope-intercept, standard, and point-slope form, the slope of the line, and both intercepts. This is a time-consuming project that I assign to advanced students to do at

Integer Scavenger Hunt

Mix it up a little and have some fun reviewing your integer unit with this “print and go” scavenger hunt. Play some fast tempo music or set the timer to get kids pumped up for the challenge. Post the integer task cards around the room or hide them to increase the challenge. Either way, students will have fun solving these problems as an end-of-unit review. This lesson was designed with sixth graders in mind; however, it can be used for fifth graders needing a challenge or seventh graders nee

Algebra 1- Expressions Unit Test With Scoring Guide - CCSS Aligned

Common Core aligned Expressions Unit Test. Included is a student test, broken down by standard for easy standard by standard scoring. Each standard is covered in depth to allow you to gauge student achievement for N.RN.3, A.SSE.1a and A.SSE.1b. Each standard asks students to justify their thinking using their own words, in complete sentences. Student led assessment will help you understand what areas student are exceeding in, meeting, and approaching content. The answer key/scoring rubric g

Word Wall Cutouts - Algebra 1

These algebra 1 vocabulary words can be posted around your room or in a central area to remind students about what they are learning. Cutout the vocabulary words and allow students to draw pictures of what each word means. Hang these up around the room to display student work and help build vocabulary for all learners, including ELL and MLL students.

Students receive a card with a either a coordinate point or linear equation on it. Then, music is played and students walk around the room as they would in musical chairs, but when the music stops, they have to pair up with another person (a coordinate point person pairs with a linear equation person and vice versa). Once paired, the teacher calls out "PARALLEL" or "PERPENDICULAR." The students then use the given point and line to write an equation that is either parallel or perpendicular to the

Quadratics Scavenger Hunt

This is a fun activity that gets students up out of their seats and moving around the classroom. Students will solve a quadratic and then use their answer to take them to the next place in the room. If they answer all of the questions correctly it should bring them back to their starting position. My kids have fun with this. They like being out of their seats and moving around the room and I hear great discussion about quadratics!

Print out individual terms that vary by variable, degree, and coefficient. Pass out one term to each student. Ask the class to arrange themselves into "like terms." See what they come up with or give them specific instructions on how to gather in like terms. Once students are in correct groups, ask them to "simplify" themselves by adding. Emphasize to students that coefficients change when adding/subtracting like terms, while the variables and exponents do not.

Factoring Problem Trail

This problem trail is a great way for students to practice factoring while walking around the classroom. The teacher can hang these problems around the classroom in numerical order. Students begin at any number (1-20) with a blank piece of paper. They write the number of the station where they begin, then show any work necessary. They should find their answer, which will send them to their next station. Then, students write the number of this station on their paper and any necessary work. This m
