Here is a simple yet effective rubric to use with students to help them see if they are accessing the MAIN IDEA of a reading selection or book. The rubric can be used for stories, novels, nonfiction selections, and textbook readings. The rubric invites students to see the difference between key ideas and main or big ideas that the author wants to put across in a text. Use as a teacher's assessment tool, to give to students as a self-assessment activity.
