Distributive Property and Combining Like Terms on the Smartboard
This SMART Notebook file for Smartboard is a lesson designed for a Pre-Algebra or Algebra class that is learning to simplify expressions by combining like terms and using the Distributive Property. There is an interactive page for each skill in which the kids use Snickers bars and Jolly Ranchers from a never-ending bank to model expressions as Algebra tiles would. Kids find this engaging, and it helps them visualize and internalize the concepts. A page of notes is also included.

Factoring With Algebra Tiles
This SMART Notebook file leads through two Algebra lessons on factoring polynoials with Algebra tiles. The first lesson uses tiles to factor out a monomial from a polynomial (also called factoring out a GCF or Greatest Common Factor). The second lesson uses tiles to factor quadratic trinomials. Notes are provided on how I use them in my classroom.

The lesson does a quick review of simplifying square roots and rationalizing the denominator. Introduction to Writing Proofs
This Smart Notebook Minilesson introduces students to writing a proof by using solving methods they are already familiar with. The lesson begins with a warm up problem of solving a two step equation. Next students are introduced to the vocabulary of hypothesis, conclusion, and conditional statement. Students are then given six examples to practice writing a two column proof using algebraic properties.

How I Teach Factoring Polynomials (Basic Factoring)
