Music Theory Intervals

This PowerPoint defines the concept of intervals and gives step-by-step instructions on how to name the intervals. Teacher notes are added to give extra instructions. This is aimed at theoretically being able to name the intervals, but also to listen to what it sounds like. Therefore the teacher should play the interval examples to the student so that they can hear what a specific interval sounds like.

Unit 10 Notes - Chord Inversions

I love this unit! Now your students should be quite comfortable with the idea of chord building, half steps, and basic Roman analysis. I always tell my students that this unit is where music starts to get really fun, because it starts unlocking more potential to be creative and have choices when writing music. I go into the process of what inversions are, why they exist, how they transfer to Roman analysis (and where that comes from), and how to figure out inversions. Lots of examples included

Unit 12 Notes - Rhythmic Dictation, Error Detection, Melodic Dictation

Unit 12 starts to really combine what students know about music theory (and how it looks/is written) with what they hear. This unit is more of a how-to rather than a lecture where you have the kids take lots of notes. I'll explain the concept, process, and suggestions for being successful at rhythmic dictation; I also introduce rhythmic error detection (where a student has a handout of a rhythm but what's played has an error; effectively making them find the correction and update it) and melodi

Unit 9 Notes - Intro to Roman Analysis with the Major Scale

As we continue to dive deeper into real "music theory", we add Unit 9. Unit 9 introduces students to their first written analysis of chords using "the Romans." I build triads off of the scale degrees in C Major to start, and show students how and why we do Roman analysis. Just like everything else in music theory, this concept will be built upon later. So don't rush through anything, take time to use my examples and make your own! I do teach Unit 9 while still practicing concepts from older uni

Unit 11 Notes - Intro to SATB, Continued Roman Analysis

Unit 11 builds on all of the previous units and adds in the concept of four-part SATB (soprano alto tenor bass) writing. Students will begin to complete Roman analysis looking at a grand staff. I give examples and suggestions in this four-page lesson plan/lecture notes. I do recommend that you continue to revisit older concepts (which should be mastered at this point), such as: note naming in treble and bass clef; counting half steps and identifying/completing intervals; aural dictation of in

Unit 8 Notes - Ties, Slurs, Dynamics

After all the "heavy" aural training and scale writing, I like to add something light and fun. Here's Unit 8, an interesting diversion of ties, slurs, and intro to dynamic and style markings. The emphasis is on being able to pronounce, identify, explain, and redraw the various symbols. We also break down basic drum rolls.I like to do a quick Italian language pronunciation lesson too, and have kids yelling "CrescENDO!" by the time they're leaving class. As always, I teach why things are the way t
