Other slides include French/Russian composers that made use of jazz (Ravel, Stravinsky); George Gershwin (with links to both concert performance and Fantasia cartoon of Rhapsody in Blue); Bernstein and Copland. Unit 3 Notes: Pitch, Intervals, Piano, Sharps and Flats, Enharmonics

This is the complete lecture notes set for Unit 3. This unit covers all the basics of pitch, including definitions and examples of: pitch, intervals, sharps and flats, enharmonics, etc. It also introduces the piano keyboard and how to identify pitch and intervals on a keyboard. I know that this sounds like a lot! And in a way, it is. However, after years of teaching this course I discovered that music can be a lot simpler than we think. And the piano actually helps solidify all of these terms, a

Unit 5 Notes: Major Scales, Sharps and Flats, Key Signatures

This massive unit goes into pitch, specifically how to build any major scale using the "formula" and how to break down the math and logic behind sharps, flats, naturals, accidentals, and key signatures. I love teaching this unit alongside the piano, so have a visual (at least a keyboard or piano keyboard handout) that kids can use to help them. I give them a copy th

Unit 7 Notes - Intervals of the Major Scale

This unit takes what the students know from writing out major scales, and teaches them the aural concept. Instead of just counting out the major scale formula and writing scales down, students will learn about perfect and major intervals that fall within the major scale. These notes are the first half of the unit, and then we use interval charts and aural sheets to teach students what each interval (Perfect Unison through Perfect Octave) look and sound like.
