Mixtures and Solutions using trail mix and kool aid- great for ESE
Students will create their own trail mix and kool-aid to demonstrate the difference between mixtures and special types of mixtures called solutions. I teach in a special-ed classroom and utilizing their measuring skills, and involving their taste buds make it easier for them to make a connection to the content.
You will need (per student, makes 1 cup. They could split with a partner or take home.)

Galapagos Finch Lab: Evolution and Adaptation: Differentiated (2 levels)
Great quick lab to reinforce structural adaptations. Students use plastic forks, knives, and spoons as "beak types" to see which "bird" would be the "fittest" and to determine what would happen to the birds with the "other beaks."

NO PREP Need a Lab Quick! -- Porosity of Soil (needs only dirt, water, cups)
This is a simple lab/worksheet that measures porosity of soil. The advantage? The materials are free and easy to obtain. All you need is dirt, some measureable containers (like a beakers or measuring cups), and water.
The initial discussion question is about the advantage that soil has over human made pavement when it comes to flooding or runoff. This lab would be a good kickstart to a lesson about flooding, permeable pavers, and other human solutions to flooding.

Hurricane Experiment: Storm Surge
This is a fun experiment to show the storm surge during a hurricane. The students put sugar cubes in a small pan and build it up to show land; water; and food coloring. This is a lab where students can move chromosomes on a karyotype to match them with their homologous chromosomes. This resource is a virtual version of the Human Karyotype lab where students would normally cut out all chromosomes, pair them up, and then identify the gender and if there are any genetic abnormalities.
