The Miles Per Gallon Illusion - Who saves more money?
This is a performance task type activity that I created. The MPG Illusion comes from a 2008 article in Science Magazine.
In the activity, students compute who would save more money by upgrading to a new fuel efficient vehicle assuming all drive the same amount of miles per year.
The results will surprise you.
Your download includes two versions. Pages 1-2 are appropriate for most classes, but pages 3-4 are for honors/advanced classes.

This is a guided practice for using tape diagrams. The modules do not provide enough practice so I made this resource as an independent activity for students to work on. There are three different types of problems that students need to identify and appropriately use the tape diagram. This resource walks them through each type of problem and highlights key words that they need to look for in order to answer the question.
