Current Event Project
Increase your students' media literacy and reading comprehension by having them complete this current event project. Using the approved websites (or websites you approve), students will use primary and secondary sources to research a current event that is happening in their city, state, country or world. Students will explore the 5 Ws for informational text while also exploring central idea and relevant details. Students will also increase their background knowledge with the current events.

Making Connections Graphic Organizer (Text-Self, Text-Text, Text-World
This graphic organizer can be used with any type of reading, non-fiction and fiction. The purpose of this graphic organizer is for students to make connections as they read. They need to choose quotes from the text, describe what the connection to this quote is (why did they choose it), and then identify what type of connection that is (Text-Text, Text-Self, Text-World).
This is a great way for students to work on close-reading strategies, and start citing evidence from the text that supports

Sketch Through the Text
This is one of my favorite classroom activities. And what's awesome about it, is that it is so versatile. It can be used with both fiction and nonfiction, and it can be used to address myriad CCSS reading standards.
The sketching element of this assignment really helps students' comprehension of the text. The written component helps support/assess reading and writing standards. It's also a super engaging activity.

Argument Evidence Position Chart - Knowing and Explaining Thinking
Using informational articles with opposing views, students read then use chart to collect evidence, determine the author's point of view, and then explain their own thinking on the subject backed by evidence. Finally, students will determine their own position. This is a great organizer for researching before discussion and drafting.
