Word problems are a big part of any Math standardized test our students take. Be it on PARCC or NWEA, this is an area where students often struggle greatly. A method aimed at helping students master word problems is called the Three Reads strategy. It is essentially a close read that allows students to focus on something specific each time they read the word problem. I did not create the method, but I noticed that there was little in the form of useful graphic organizers. I created this form in

Interpreting the Remainder Template

This is a fantastic tool for students to use when showing and explaining what they did with the remainder to a division problem. The word problem at the top can be changed out as you desire. Students show their work and then indicate what they did with the remainder by circling the choices. Afterwards, the students draw a diagram that goes along with the word problem, and write a sentence explaining their answer. This tool also mirrors what is expected of students on the constructed response mat

Graphic organizer for solving word problems. Guides students to analyze multiple choice answers by creating them on their own. Students create four possible answers for a word problem. I taught my students that one answer would be the correct answer, one would be the opposite of what you were supposed to do (add instead of subtract) one would be using incorrect math and one would be a crazy answer. Students really got into this because they thought they were tricking the standardized tests.
