A method aimed at helping students master word problems is called the Three Reads strategy. It is essentially a close read that allows students to focus on something specific each time they read the word problem. I did not create the method, but I noticed that there was little in the form of useful graphic organizers. I created this form in

We’ve all had students who love to draw and would happily doodle all day long, and others who gaze out the window imagining how much fun they would have if they could just go outside. These are the students I was thinking of when I developed Factor and Multiple Trees. This math differentiation tool engages students who have visual-spatial and naturalistic strengths, encouraging them to use those strengths to creatively demonstrate a math concept. I use these math fact tracking sheets for students to log their math facts every day when doing timed facts tests. The assignment portion of the log allows you to put which facts they are working on, whether its multiplication, division etc. My favorite part is the space where students can write the facts they missed on the test. This helps them reflect on which facts they need to work on. Over time, students really gain ownership of their facts and start to see trends in their growth!
