This is a SUPER writing assignment that I give out BEFORE I actually begin the play Hamlet. Students are given the speech and are asked to analyze the content of it, the characterization, the tone, diction, and imagery --- all key parts to an AP curriculum and to understanding artistry of writing. Students are given guidelines as to how to organize the one page analysis, beginning with a jazzy opening sentence, supplying specific, crisp adjectives, etc.

After learning the components of a 5-paragraph essay, students can take this as a formative assessment to show the teacher that they are ready to submit their final draft. Students will read the picture book Pink and Say. Once the story is complete students will be taken step by step throughout the process of writing an essay. Each individual step will be discussed and reviewed starting with a thesis statement to the final draft. Instruction will allowed for differentiation based on needs and abilities.
