These notes correspond with my First and Second Derivative Tests and Concavity PowerPoint. Students may follow along as you go through the power point and make their own notes. This hopefully saves time and allows students to focus more on the concept rather than trying to get everything written down.

Rollercoaster Project

The Rollercoaster project is interactive and hands-on to assess the student's knowledge of polynomials and slopes. Students work in groups of 3-4 and will complete the assignment in roughly a week. Teachers can alter the amount of time needed for completion. Student's have their own roles and room for creativity. This would work as a great quarter project for a review of turning points, end behaviors, and writing polynomial functions.

Calculus: The Coyotes Instantaneous Velocity on Impact with Key (Editable)

Before delving into calculus directly, I like to give my precalculus/IB students something to which they can relate: the concept of instantaneous velocity, as it applies to the infamous cartoon coyote. This activity "holds their hands" through the process of calculating the coyote's instantaneous velocity from an informal limits perspective. I use it within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions. The file includes spiral review problems.

Apply change of base formula and logs to find calculations, and get a short glimpse at exponential decay. The packet is about 6 pages in all. My students really enjoyed it!! I am uploading as a word doc so you can change the names of schools/teachers.

It includes a 1 cm X 1 cm grid so that each group can create one box, and we can compare the volumes of each box. Once students see a very short, flat box, compared to a very tall, narrow box, they quickly see that the optimal boxes are somewhere in between. Make sure you run off the two pages separately, so the worksheet and the grid are separate. The rest of the worksheet "holds th
