May is Asian American, Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. An important celebration, but one that doesn’t typically draw the fanfare of February’s Black History Month, or Hispanic Heritage Month. However, with the popularity of Disney’s Moana and Lava songs, I have found an easy engagement piece that allows students to access a part of the world they might not be familiar with. By the time they found out these islands were made from volcanos they were totally hooked! Each song features a map

The top of the paper has letters in boxes representing the notes for those students who are not reading music on the staff or those who are having trouble with reading music on the staff. We will often focus on one area of the page or the other.

In this lesson, students will evaluate what the emergence of the Girl Groups said about the roles of girls and women in the early 1960s. The nation sat on the threshold of a new Women’s Rights movement that would challenge traditional female roles. This song can be the starting point for a debate. It’s about the role of mother/carer. The setting is in a flying saucer. An alien looks down on the multi-tasking feats of a young mother and ponders. It’s also a starter for an art piece “What would the alien look like”? Musicians have an opportunity to play the riff which is for more advanced pupils and percussion for those just starting out. In the pack 1. Animated video of the song (or PowerPoint if you prefer) 2. Lyrics 3. 2 mp3s vocal and

This is the lyrics for a song parody of Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never." I have rewritten the song to be about the life of the Japanese Samurai. I play the guitar and sing this song for my 7th graders, although it is possible to simple play the original song or a karaoke version and have the kids sing along.
