Looking for simple, yet engaging activities for the Middle School Math classroom? This particular activity is a song that talks about the steps for converting numbers between fractions, decimals and percents. It's a wonderful way to help students memorize the steps and it's really fun! This can used at many grade levels, but is geared toward 6th and 7th grade when they are learning about conversions. It only take a few minutes to teach the song, but for best results, should be revisited often.

This solo fingerstyle guitar arrangement has been a favorite with guitarists since it was first published in 1997. I have incorporated artistic fingerings from my classical guitar background and kept the music simple and elegant. It is in drop D tuning and includes easy to see notation, tablature, and lyrics. A guaranteed favorite.

A memorable tune, mathematical vocabulary, and a practical application of an invaluable tool for problem based learning - Oh My Darlin' Number Line. This slide show not only contains a song that I still hear my 5th graders sing in class but, it also contains valuable vocabulary and conceptual ties to prior knowledge to help students relate to how to use a number line. As adults we often do not realize the angst a student has while trying to choose an appropriate tool to solve a complex word

The Decimal Song

A few years ago, I had a conversation with students that led me to realize that many of them lack a basic understanding of the concept of a decimal (ie. it works like a fraction- it is less than one, or part of a whole). That led to me working this song into my math program. It is simple and catchy and hammers the point home, so that they won't (can't!) forget it. I used it as an introduction into decimals because it pumps up a unit that can otherwise get a bit dry. The tune is to the Banana

This is a fun song to the tune of a familiar TV theme song that helps students remember how to change a terminating or repeating decimal into a fraction. It will definitely help your students remember there is a big difference between the two conversions. I emphasize that terminating decimals end, die, RIP, like the Terminator ends your life. Then we talk about repeating decimals and how they are like the Energizer bunny that keeps going, and going, and going... The bunny ears we draw like 9'

This is a song about how to add, subtract, multiply and divide with decimals to the tune of "Wide Awake" by Katy Perry. My students and I sing this multiple times throughout the year to compute with decimals. I also use it as a call and response when students get stuck and don't know what to do. I'll watch students mouthing the words on tests and quizzes to help them remember. I've also gotten public performances when I've run into students outside of school.
