Text Structures Rap (Iggy Azalea Parody)
Many of my students were struggling with learning and recognizing the differences between the six nonfiction text structures. So, I rewrote Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" to include information about cause and effect, question and answer, description, problem and solution, compare and contrast, and chronological order/sequence. Enjoy!
Also, I changed "I.G.G.Y." to M.U.L.E because our school mascot is the mule. You could change that part to any four letter word or team you'd like.

The Cay Song Analysis & Text-Text Connection Assignment
Students listen to the song "Amazing Grace" (I use the Leann Rimes version on YouTube) and read the lyrics. They highlight a "snippet" (anything from a word to 2 sentences) that strikes them. They gather in a circle and share what they picked and why. They then analyze how the song connects to Phillip's prejudice of Timothy in The Cay. Shakespeare Sonnets 18 & 29 Musical Worksheets
Explore famous Shakespearean sonnets using music genres such as hip-hop! Students will be exposed to a TedTalk by the rapper/scholar Akala, and will also hear a great Rufus Wainwright interpretation. They will read Shakespeare sonnets in their original and paraphrased format, and will work together to answer multiple choice and short response questions about these texts. Creating Relevance with Letters to a Young Poet
Students love to use music in lessons, which is why this lesson was an amazing way to introduce "Letters to a Young Poet." Students started by listening to the song, "Let Nas Down" and then annotated the text excerpt from the song during their bellringer. Together, they determined the central idea of the song. This activity flowed right into the premise of "Letters to a Young Poet" because students were eager to find and analyze the pieces of advice one artist offered to another.

This activity is to be used after listening to the songs "I Loved Her First" by Heartland and "My Little Girl" by Tim McGraw. It includes questions about point of view, theme, audience, author's purpose, and compare and contrast. The lyrics to the songs are not included but can be found easily by doing an online search.

Text Dependent Question Song
As a special education teacher, my students struggle with answering a text dependent question. I wrote this song to teach my students the steps involved. It follows the tune of "We Will Rock You". My students keep the beat with their hands as we sing this tune. I have seen an improvement in their understanding of how to respond to text dependent questions.
