This DNA Fingerprinting Simulated Crime Scene Activity is a great way to begin your unit on the structure, function and processes of DNA in order to elicit student interest in learning about the DNA molecule! I introduce this crime scene situation on the first day of studying DNA then do a series of lessons on DNA structure and replication, all while the crime scene is set up in the classroom to keep my students engaged. The last day of the week, we do this fingerprinting activity to determine t

Gifted Crime Scene Investigation Activity The Case of the Missing Cash

This highly engaging crime scene investigation activity will have your students using their critical thinking skills as they critically read and analyze witness testimonies, view and evaluate evidence, and draw inferences to determine the motive and identity of the person guilty of robbing a bank. Higher-level thinking skills will be practiced while investigating the crime scene, as students form a hypothesis about who committed the crime, establish a motive, and then justify their hypothesis b

In this forensic science activity for middle school students, students will identify unknown substances to solve a "crime." Unlike other forensics activities, this lab will not give your students nightmares! This activity is perfect for traditional classrooms, enrichment programs/camps, homeschool co-ops, and homeschool students. This is a great alternative to graphic or scary CSI activities. This lab is easy to set up with common materials you can easily find at your local grocery store. Teste

Ballistics Bullet Striations Comparison Worksheet

This is a simulated Bullet Striation activity -- students will be given 12 bullet striation exemplars to compare with 8 pieces of evidence. The recording sheet asks them to match each piece of evidence with an exemplar. They also determine how many shots each exemplar weapon fired and determine the purpose of the weapon.Evidence can be printed on paper - or you can laminate it for re-use each year.Good luck -- and let me know if there are improvements I could make on the activity.

Students will learn and practice the steps to conduct genetic recombination in order to solve a real world problem. This is the activity you have been waiting for! Students will choose the correct restriction enzymes, find the correct cut sites to remove the gene, and place the gene fragment in another DNA strand using the same restriction enzymes. Finally they will simulate the effects of DNA ligase bonding the sticky ends with tape. This has it all! There are two versions included. One for adva

This simple activity can be done with partners or alone. The end product (shown in photo) is like catching DNA in the act of replication when it is half done. It works well when you have only one hour to do an activity and does not need the details you would need with other DNA building activities. I have used this as an introduction to replication in my life science classes.

Looking for fun end of the year activities, middle school teacher? Introduce your students to chemistry in forensics and how investigators use chemistry (chromatography) in forensics to solve crimes. You will definitely want to add this not-so-scary, hands-on experiment to your list of mock crime scene investigations (CSI) activities. Your upper elementary or middle school students will love this mock crime scene classroom activity! This activity was designed for my homeschool co-op, but it can

I wanted to make a group of paper molecules that could be used to make models of DNA, replication and Protein Synthesis for those of you who don't have plastic or wooden models. I also wanted it to work for middle school kids also. I tried to make the bases, sugars and phosphates as simply as I could so as to not take away from the processes. Tape on the back of the molecules is used to hold them together. I hope this meets your needs!

This simulation uses student-made pieces or the plastic pieces found in the KD Biographics kit you can buy from many of the biological supply companies. Since I have the kits, it only takes one period, but if the students are going to cut them out, it would probably take 2 class periods. If you like this lab activity, you would probably want to start with my "DNA Model with Paper" activity which uses the same pieces.
