This is a powerpoint detailing each musical era with important composers and facts. Over 100 slides detailing musicians from Palestrina to Dizzy Gillespie, going from the Medieval through the Jazz Era. I use this in class as a springboard to discuss and research different composers and how music changed over the years.

Famous Female Composers - International Women's Day Research Activity
A quick music research activity in honour of International Women's Day (March 8th). Students are required to research 3 different female composers: One from eras pre-1800; one from the late modern era (1800-1900's), and one from the 20th century to present day. In this activity students work individually or with a partner to research a genre or sub-genre of music. Using the guiding questions provided in the research organizer, students create a visual (poster, brochure, etc) and an oral presentation teaching the class about their genre. This assignment has students evaluate the song Photograph by Ed Sheeran and Amazing by Martin Harrington and allows them to draw their own conclusions on whether Ed Sheeran has violated copyright law. Both songs are linked to start at the chorus, which is the section that is allegedly stolen.

Poetry in Pop Music
Even though it might be depressing for English teachers, the fact is that poetry has pretty much been replaced by popular songs. Are these songs poems? Allow your students to argue in favor of their favorite artists and learn about poetic devices in the process.
Students who dislike everything about English class will enjoy this assignment. Know ahead of time what you will do about naughty lyrics, especially if you have students present to the class.
